Weekly on-site portrait performances
by Alexa Meade

Alexa Meade will create new photographs of portrait performances each week in her installation at Irvine Contemporary. The first new photographs of the portrait performance during the opening evening are now on view and available at the gallery. Gallery visitors are invited to observe the weekly performances and the artist's photography of her portrait models in unique installations from 4-6PM on the following Saturdays:

Recent Artists' News

Alexa Meade is featured in the July Juxtapoz magazine.

Shawne Major will have an exhibition at the Dallas Contemporary museum, opening Sept. 16.

Phil Nesmith has been on the Louisiana and Mississippi gulf coast documenting the BP oil spill and its effects. He's shooting with large format wet collodion plates and digital cameras. Here is a description of his project, Exposure.

Kerry Skarbakka is planning a project in collaboration with the Corcoran Gallery of Art that will involve photographing "museum visitor" performers experiencing the "Stendahl syndrome," being overcome with emotion in the presence of sublime artworks. He also recently co-curated Art Scouts, and artist-curated exhibition at the Arlington Arts Center.

Gaia recently created a large-scale, hand-painted mural on the alley wall behind Irvine Contemporary (alley wall of Whole Foods, P and 14th-15th Sts.). The painting features imagery in his current exhibition, Gaia: The Urban Romantic. Slideshow of mural.

The new book featuring Gaia, Beyond the Street: The 100 Leading Figures in Urban Art (2010), is available at the gallery. This major work documents the artists, curators, museums, and galleries that have defined street art in the past two decades.
